What is this fan??

On October 20, 2009 ; at 11:27 A.M.; in Masaru Yoshida, the Nikkei Electronics of the Dyson Ltd. announced a new electric fan, named Dyson Air Multiplier. The electric fan looks like a cylindrical column topped with a ring. Frankly, at its first sight I thought it was some new instrument used in gymnastics. 

Q. How can it be a fan with no wings?

A. This is a fan with unseen wings. This actually means that the wings are inside the its body i.e. the cylindrical body.

Mechanism of Air Multiplier

The multiplier uses the fan to blow air into the ring, which is hollow from inside. Then, later air comes out a narrow opening of the ring. Finally, 15 times as much air which is sent by the fan can be blown from the large area because of a viscous shear flow. The fan inside the body blows the air at around 20 I/S into the hollow ring, whose cross section looks like a aircraft wing. A 40 watt electric motor sucks the air through the small vents present in the base of the multiplier.

The air blown from an about 1.3mm gap that is found near the tip of the wing and it flows along the surface of the wing at high speed, making the air pressure in its periphery negative. Therefore, the surrounding air is sucked in. 

It can described as the same principle as providing lifting power to an aircraft. To evely sen air into the ring, the nine blades are positioned in irregular intervals. Probably, it accelerates the speed in the circumferential direction in the ring so that runs through the ring.

Advantages of such fans

1. It can evenly blow air unlike the electric fan. 
2. It does not pose a threat of damaging or hurting human fingers.
3. Very easy to maintain than electric fan. 

Cost and Models

The maximum power consumption is 40W and the quantity of airflow can be adjusted later according to our comfort. The Air Multiplier comes in two sizes which is 25 and 30cm. Also the fan has a function to turn through an angle of 90. These fans which come in two models also come with weight difference of 1.7kg and 1.8kg. These cost around $410 for 1.7kg and $420 for 1.8kg.
